Dr. Allen Cherer, Neonatologist based in Charlotte, N.C.

Dr. Allen Cherer is a board-certified Pediatrician and Neonatologist with over 30 years of experience. A dedicated physician, Dr. Cherer profoundly values the opportunity to provide specialized care to sick newborns. His career closely tracks the incredible advances in neonatal intensive care. The field has grown extensively, assisted by unbelievable scientific advancements paired with technological innovation, and Dr. Cherer continues to proudly serve his community by caring for its most vulnerable members.
After earning his B.A. in Biology from the University of Virginia and his M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia, Dr. Cherer trained in Pediatrics at the University of Louisville’s Kosair Children’s Hospital. Following residency, he became Chief of Pediatrics at the USAF Regional Hospital Minot (North Dakota) after being commissioned in the United States Air Force Medical Corps. Once he completed his military service, Dr. Cherer started a neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship in the Joint Program in Neonatology at Harvard Medical School. His research included the causes and sequelae of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in preterm infants. An experienced neonatologist, Dr. Allen Cherer has cared for thousands of newborns and their families in Georgia, California, and North Carolina. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a member of the Section on Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and the North Carolina Pediatric Society. He has been extremely active with quality improvement initiatives sponsored by the Vermont Oxford Network (VON) to improve the care to infants and families affected by substance abuse disorders, as well as by the Perinatal Quality Collaborative of North Carolina (PQCNC) to further engage patients and families in hospital care practices. Also, Dr. Cherer is an instructor with the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) sponsored by the American Academy of Pediatrics and the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program.
